Body Mass Index or BMI is a tool that can be used for an assessment of your body mass. As in, do you weigh appropriately for your height? Or are you fostering a little more weight than necessary?

While a BMI result can definitely tell you about your overall health, it cannot for sure tell you the percentage of fat you retain. But, research has shown that it still moderately correlates to the fat you hold in your body.

BMI is an easy method to identify your body’s weight in either of these four categories: underweight, normal, overweight and obese. This technique is often even used by health practitioners to decide whether your weight is putting you at a risk of heart disease, diabetes and hypertension.

Let’s take a look at how to calculate your BMI so that you know what’s your BMI.

How to Calculate BMI?

BMI is calculated in the same way for all genders and age above 20 years.Taking out your BMI is as simple as ABC, with the exception that it’s all numerical.

The first step to knowing what is your BMI is to know the formula itself.

There are two ways to write the BMI formula depending upon measuring units you wish to use.

  1. Using Kilograms and Metres

    BMI equals weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared.

    BMI = weight(KG) / Height (meters)2

  2. Using Pounds and Inches

    BMI equals weight in pounds divided by height in inches squared multiplied by 703.

    BMI= Weight (Pounds) / Height (inches)2 * 703

To help you use a body mass index formula, let’s do a calculation as an example.

A woman weighs 130 pounds and is about 63 inches tall. Let’s perform a calculation to show you how to apply the body mass index formula.

    BMI = Weight (pounds)/ Height (inches)2 * 703
    BMI = 30 / (63)2 * 703 — thirty divided by 63 squared times 703

    BMI= 130/ (3969) * 703– 130 divided by 3969 times 703

    BMI= 0.033 * 703– point 033 times 703

    BMI = 23.0– BMI is calculated as 23.0

So, this calculation gives a number. We got the number 23. This number is then tallied in a chart to understand what category you fall in.

BMI Categories

I’ve already mentioned the 4 major weight categories that the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has made. The 4 major categories include underweight, normal, overweight and obese.

What the weight categories indicate about you

Underweight: A BMI of less than 18.5 indicates you’re underweight. To put on some of those pounds, visit a nutritionist to help you form a better meal plan.

Ideal BMI: If your BMI is between 18.5 to 24.9, you have a normal weight. You just need to maintain this BMI by following a healthy lifestyle.

Overweight: A BMI of 25 to 29.8 indicates you are overweight for your height. You’ll need to start exercising and replace your food with healthy choices.

Obesity: A BMI of 30 and above indicates Obesity. If you are obese, you need to see a doctor immediately. Being heavily overweight can make you more prone to develop heart diseases. Therefore you need to work on losing those extra pounds.

So if your BMI is 22, you fall in the normal weight category but if it’s like 16 or 31 you need to take precautions ASAP!

BMI CHART

A BMI chart is a graphical representation of BMI against height and weight. So if you’ve measured your height and weight but are too lazy to calculate through the formula or do not have a calculator on you, simply use this chart. Look for your weight and look for your height, now sketch lines and see where they meet to know what is your BMI.

For example,

From this table, we can infer that a woman of 5 feet 6 inches is healthy if her weight is 130 pounds, overweight if she is 170 pounds and obese if she is 210 pounds.

So, get going. Take out your calculators and punch in those numbers!

If your BMI states you as overweight or obese, let your doctor know. Your doctor will then evaluate your body’s health through different ways to determine whether you are overweight or not. Some of these methods include measuring skinfold thickness, waist size, and evaluation of diet.

The goal to measure your BMI is to see what lifestyle changes will help you reach or maintain your goal weight and maintain a healthy body weight.
