Abudo's courses helped empower me when I was suffering from breast cancer. They helped me understand what was happening to my body and how I could overcome my emotions. I recommend this course to everyone who has breast cancer or knows someone suffering from it.

In A World Full of Toxic Cosmetics

Everyone wishes to look young and beautiful throughout their life. Primarily so, because beauty has become the determinant of love and affection, all thanks to the stereotypical preference of “beautiful” appearances in all walks of life.

To live up to these standards, we use different products to make our appearance more glowy, dewy and just attractive. But at what price? Do you know that we are surrounded by toxic cosmetics everywhere that are detrimental to our health?

Yes! There are many harmful ingredients in different makeup and self-care products that we aren’t aware of. When you are buying personal care products there are certain chemicals that you need to steer clear of. Here’s a list of harmful ingredients in makeup and self-care products that affect your health.

Harmful Ingredients in Makeup Products

Parabens top the list of toxic elements in makeups. Parabens are used in the cosmetic industry to soften personal care products. Studies have found that parabens disrupt endocrine functions. It means that these chemicals either mimic, block, or interfere hormones secreted by endocrine glands in your bodies, causing disruption in overall bodily functions.

Next comes phthalates, these are used in nail polishes, perfumes, moisturizers, lotions, and hair sprays. They, just like parabens, disrupt your endocrine functions too. They are reported to lead to early breast development in young girls and reproductive birth defects in males and females along with causing breast cancer.

Lead is another toxic chemical that is present in many beauty products including foundation, lipsticks, and even whitening toothpaste. Lead is a proven neurotoxin that leads to miscarriage, reduced fertility, and delays in the onset of puberty in females. What’s even more astonishing is that the FDA has found 33 brands of lipsticks that contain lead. As an alternative, we suggest that you always buy products colored with fruit pigments or other natural pigments.

Another harmful toxin that is used in beauty products is mercury. It is generally found in skin lightening soaps and creams. Some brands also use it in eye make-up, cleansing products, and mascara. Mercury-based beauty products can cause skin rashes, skin discoloration, and scarring. If a pregnant woman swallows a mercury product or the mercury absorbs into the skin, the developing baby may develop serious neuro-developmental defects later in life.

Somebody sprays contain aluminum that is used to stop perspiration. It is found that exposure to aluminum is linked to seizures, breast cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, and kidney problems.

Some personal care products including toothpaste, soaps, and handwashes use triclosan that is an antimicrobial agent. It’s known to disrupt endocrine function especially the function of the thyroid and reproductive hormones. Many studies have ruled that this agent is making bacteria antibiotic-resistant, which again is pretty bad for you.

Sunscreen Chemicals

A number of sunscreens contain chemicals that are used to absorb ultraviolet light. The harmful aspect of these chemicals is that it can disrupt endocrine functions. Research has proven that these chemicals get absorbed in your body causing cellular damage and in extreme cases, even cause cancer. Some of the common chemicals used in sunscreens include benzophenone, PABA, avobenzone, homosalate, and methoxycinnamate.

Toluene is another not-so-friendly element used in makeup products. It’s a petrochemical that is used to dissolve paint and acts as a thinner. It is commonly used in nail polishes, nail treatments, body washes, conditioners, eyeshadows, and hair dyes. Research suggests that toluene can cause respiratory problems, nausea, and skin irritation. It may also trigger allergic skin reactions and affect your immune system.

So, if you see personal care products containing any of these above-mentioned toxins, don’t use them! Because in the end, these toxic cosmetics are going to take a toll on your health! Instead, try looking for alternatives to living a no tox life!
