Why People With Weak Immune Systems Are at High Risk of Diseases

Why People With Weak Immune Systems Are at High Risk of Diseases

The human body is full of wonders and surprising combinations of production, revitalization and a constant fight against the health hazards both from inside and outside. Just like any system that would require its safety through the security system, our body also runs a system that needs security against all the odds. The body's security system is called the immune system. Without this immune system, you may continuously get sick. This immune system consists of cells, tissues and organs that are simultaneously working to protect the body.

The immune system works like a strong army against its enemies. Enemies of the body typically include viruses, bacteria, fungi and other foreign particles. These enemies of the body kickstart an immune reaction, in case of a weakened immune system, the body fails to fight off the disease.

Why are people with weak immune systems at a high risk of falling sick?
Our body's immune system consists of multiple elements such as the white blood cells, lymph nodes, lymph fluids, T cells, B cells etc. If even one of the factors is not working optimally, it may cause the immune system to collapse as a whole. The immune system works day and night to look after the body. It is on a continuous lookout to catch foreign bodies that may damage the body. If the body's immune system is compromised, it may pave the way to more significant diseases and not even be able to sustain smaller problems such as seasonal flu.

Who Is At The Highest Risk?

A weak immune system can be a result of a disorder. Immunodeficiency disorders can range from mild to severe and can be present from birth or come in effect in later stages of a person's life. There are many signs that indicate poor immunity.

Generally, the following groups are at the highest risk of having a compromised immune system:

Children

Children under the age of 2 are most vulnerable. These children have not yet developed a fully functional immune system due to which they are at very high risk. After the age of two, generally, children have encountered enough viruses and bacteria for their immunity to be more durable.

Pregnant Women

A pregnant woman undergoes a lot of hormonal changes. These hormonal changes change the immune system, too, so to keep the baby safe in the womb for a good nine months. As the immune system is altered, it makes the mother more susceptible to different diseases.

Adults Over The Age Of 65

As a person ages, the body undergoes regular wear and tear. Just as you don't have the stamina to run the 1 mile, your immunity also lacks the strength to patrol day and night to catch foreign bodies.

People With Chronic Diseases

People who are living with illnesses such as heart, lung and kidney diseases have been proven to have a weak immune system. Why this might be happening is still not clear. Many scientists believe that chronic diseases cause inflammation and may even change signalling within the immune system.

Immunocompromised People (due to a disease or a treatment)

Being diagnosed with a condition such as HIV or undergoing treatment such as chemotherapy for cancer can severely damage your immune system and make you susceptible to multiple diseases.

If you do not fall into any of the categories mentioned above, it is still possible to have a weak immune system. If you have been noticing for some time that you feel fatigued and tired, find yourself falling sick, or maybe there is some health situation that you can't figure out, then probably you should check your immune system. Here are some warning signs of a weak immune system.

High-Stress Levels

A report from the American Psychological Association states that people who have been under stress for a very long time are likely to have weakened immune systems. Prolonged stresses harm the immune system. During stress, the white blood cells are destroyed substantially. The white cells help a great deal to fight against viruses attacking your body.

Catching Cold Frequently

If you are catching a cold more regularly, probably it's a good time to check your immune system by running relevant tests. Typically people recover from cold in about ten days or so. People with weakened immune systems may take a lot longer to recover fully.

Frequent Infections

According to the American Academy of Allergy Asthma & Immunology reports, a weak immune system may cause frequent infections.

Feeling Tired All The Time

If you are taking proper sleep and still feel tired, you might be struggling wit ha weak immune system.

Your body gives off signs for everything, including having a weak immune system. All you have to do is look at it carefully and understand these signs that indicate poor immunity. Your immune system may also get more vulnerable if you drink or smoke regularly or if you have been on a low nutritive diet. The best way to stay healthy is to eat healthily, have enough sleep, exercise regularly and load off on the stress. You may even want to look at booster tips that can boost the immune system, naturally.
