Soothe Your Munchkin Now: Understanding Reasons Why Babies Cry

Babies cry. In fact, newborns only Eat. Sleep. Cry and Repeat!

That’s true. Newborns, unlike grown-ups, are still in the growing phase of their lives (literally, they have practically just begun growing!). All they need is a kickstart to their long life ahead. For this, they either eat or sleep, both of which encourage growth (Science says that, not us)

When these babies, who are only eating and sleeping feel the need to communicate with the parent, especially when they are uneasy, hungry or in need of attention, they CRY.

Yes, there’s no getting around it. The frequency of crying episodes vary from baby to baby, but new parents should prepare themselves to deal with these little wails for at least 2 to 3 hours a day. As parents, it’s amazing how they witness their baby showing a range of emotions at this early age.

However, it is just as difficult for them to understand the reasons why babies cry. So here’s what Abudo knows about reasons why babies cry and some helpful tips to soothe your little munchkin:

Why Do Newborn Babies Cry?

Following are the reasons why babies cry:

Babies Cry Because They Are Hungry

Hunger pangs contribute to a list of reasons why babies cry. Look around! You will come across many people who get cranky when they are hungry. Similarly, a child is likely to do the same whose only means of communication is crying. Babies can go from being absolutely silent – being in their own zone to screaming pretty quickly when they are hungry. The “feed me” cries are rhythmic, repetitive and low pitched. Your baby’s small stomach can’t hold very much so be prepared for feeding your child several times a day.

“ Caution: Your baby might not stop crying immediately. You have to stay calm and wait until your baby’s stomach is full. However, if your baby is still crying there might be other reasons. ”

Babies Cry Because They Have Colic

Colic is one of the top reasons why babies cry. To understand colic remember the rule of three. It’s a condition in which a baby who has colic cries for more than three hours a day, three days a week, and 3 weeks in a row. These babies with colic cry because they feel severe pain in the abdomen due to wind or obstruction of intestines. The “colic” cries are excessive, difficult to console and lead to disrupted sleep patterns. Babies who have colic even clench their fists, draw up their knees, or arch their backs when they cry. Hence, they cry on the aforementioned rule of three that is, more than three hours and so on…

“Some helpful tips: Cuddle or swaddle your baby, take your baby for a walk, give your baby a gentle tummy massage, create some white noise to soothe your baby ”

Babies Cry Because They Are Tired

Among many reasons why babies cry is feeling of tiredness. It’s a myth that babies will fall asleep whenever or wherever they want. If your baby receives a lot of attention from grandparents, uncles, or aunts they find it hard to settle and become overtired. It is also noted that exposure to bright light and noise also plays a significant role in irritating your baby.

“How to soothe an overtired baby? Take them to a calm and quiet place, pat on their back, or wrap your baby ”

Babies Cry Because They Want You To Hold Them

Newborns need a lot of cuddling, physical contact, and reassurance to stay sane. The reason behind that is they came from a compact environment and the outside world might seem like an alien place to them. So, if your baby is crying it might be a signal that they want you to hold them.

“Tip: While holding your baby sway or sing to them to provide comfort, hold your baby in such a position that they hear your heartbeat ”

Babies Cry Because Of Change In Temperature

Yes, another reason why babies cry is due change is temperature. You can check your baby’s body temperature by feeling their tummy or back of the neck. It’s recommended that you shouldn’t be guided by feeling your baby’s hands or feet because babies are more likely to feel colder in these areas than rest of the body.

“Tip: Keeping a normal temperature for your baby: Keep your room temperature between 16°C to 20°C, always use thermometer to monitor your baby’s body temperature, dress up your baby according to the weather, use cotton sheets and cellular blankets for your baby’s bedding”

Babies Cry Because They Need A Nappy Change

Some babies protest when their nappy is wet or soiled. However, some babies don’t mind their wet nappies unless they start irritating them. Whatever the situation is some babies also don’t like the nappy change process. It is because of the strange feeling of cold air on their skin.

“Tip:How to tackle a baby during nappy change? Play some music, sing for your baby, soothe with their favorite toy”

Babies Cry Because They Are Not Well

If you observe weaker, more urgent, continuous, or a high pitched cry it might be a sign that your baby is unwell. Having said that if your baby cries a lot and becomes unusually quiet, this also indicates that something is wrong.

“What to do? Don’t hesitate in consulting a pediatrician

Babies Cry Because They Need To Burp

The last reason why babies cry on our list is If your baby cries during or after a feed, it’s a sign that they need to be burped. Some babies also need to be burped after sucking a pacifier, having the hiccups or crying. The reason is they swallow air during these rituals which makes them irritable.

“How to burp a baby: Hold your baby against your shoulder and gently pat or rub their back”

Crying is just a phase that will vanish as the baby ages. Now that you know the reasons why babies cry, you know that your baby is only trying to communicate.
As your baby will age and learn other means of communication there will be no excessive crying. For now, be patient and allow your baby to cry his way out of the newborn days.
